Purposeful games are designed to help players learn, explore, and engage with complex topics in meaningful ways. These games create powerful learning experiences by offering opportunities for:
Active engagement: Players take an active role in their own learning, rather than passively receiving information.
Collaborative problem-solving: Games often require teamwork, encouraging players to work together and develop shared solutions.
Experiential learning: Through immersive and interactive scenarios, players apply what they know in realistic, hands-on contexts.
Exploration and reflection: These games provide a safe environment to experiment, make decisions, and reflect on outcomes—fostering deeper understanding and critical thinking.

We’ll be exploring the world of purposeful games and taking a look at a range of formats such as role-playing games (RPGs), narrative-driven experiences, and immersive experiential games.
Together, we'll uncover what makes these formats such powerful tools for learning experience design, and you’ll gain hands-on experience with gameplay and insights into how these games are thoughtfully crafted. We'll also explore practical design strategies, including how to align game mechanics with specific learning objectives and how to deliver purposeful game experiences that truly resonate with participants.
Throughout the workshop, we’ll connect game-based approaches to relevant learning theories, helping you understand why and how games can be so effective in educational and professional contexts. We’ll also spend time on the conceptual foundations of purposeful game design which will give you the tools to think critically and creatively about your own practice. A dedicated Q&A session will offer space to explore your specific interests, challenges, and goals.
